Kraft paper, though naturally durable, lacks significant barrier properties against moisture and oxygen. To enhance these properties and make it suitable for packaging food products like sugar, tea, coffee, and flour, kraft paper is often combined with materials such as VMCPP (Vacuum Metallised Cast Polypropylene), polyethylene (PE), or aluminum foil. These combinations provide varying levels of protection, making the kraft packaging effective at preserving the quality of the contents.
For a kraft stand-up pouch to be considered 'kerbside recyclable' under OPRL (On-Pack Recycling Label) guidelines in the UK, the packaging must contain no more than 15% plastic by weight when using 100 GSM paper or higher. This means that if the pouch primarily consists of kraft paper with a thin plastic lining, such as PE or polypropylene, it can still qualify for recycling in standard household recycling streams.
However, achieving full recyclability in kraft pouches that include resealable features like grip seals (ziplocks) is challenging. These seals typically add additional plastic, with a linear weight of about 4g/m. To stay within the 15% plastic content limit, a thicker grade of kraft paper is often required, which can increase the overall weight of the pouch by up to 20% compared to mono-material alternatives. Despite this increase in weight, the benefits of kerbside recyclability are significant, providing a more sustainable packaging option. By carefully balancing the materials used, companies can offer a recyclable, functional, and environmentally friendly packaging solution that meets consumer demand for sustainability.
